Carter Frederick, Director of Bands, BM University of Houston
Carter Frederick is in his first year as director of bands at Jersey Village High School. Prior to that, he spent the last 7 years as the Associate Director of Bands at JVHS.
Kyle Stahl, Percussion Director/Associate Director of Bands, BM University of Houston
Kyle Stahl is in his 5th year at Jersey Village High School as the Percussion Director and an Associate Director of Bands. Under the direction of Mr. Stahl, the Jersey Village Percussion Ensemble was the 2017 Mark of Excellence National Winner and has been a consistent sweepstakes winner at contest. Mr. Stahl spent the first 6 years of his career as the Percussion Director and Associate Director of Bands at Cypress Ranch High School. The Cypress Ranch Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2014 Bands of America National Percussion Festival, and was the Mark of Excellence 2014 Percussion Honors National Winner. Prior to his career in Cy-Fair, Mr. Stahl worked alongside Dusty Norris at Clear Brook High School, a WGI Open Class Finalist.
Mr. Stahl is a graduate of the University of Houston, where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2009. While pursuing his education at UH, he studied Wind Ensemble Pedagogy with Eddie Green, Tom Bennett, and David Bertman, and Percussion with John Best, Joel Fulgham, and Dr. Blake Wilkins. During his undergraduate studies, Mr. Stahl arranged for the Spirit of Houston Drumline.
Mr. Stahl has been a member of the 2005 Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, and the 2006 World Champion Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. While marching, he had the opportunity to learn from some of the best teachers in DCI, including Jim Casella, Jim Ancona, Dustin Schletzer, Brian Perez, Pat Amann, and Brent Montgomery.
Mr. Stahl’s professional affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. He is an educational endorser for Evans Drumheads and Innovative Percussion.
Mr. Stahl resides in the Tomball area with his wife Meredith, their two sons Connor and Corban, and their dog Ranger.
Ben Zein, Associate Director of Bands, BM University of Texas
Ben Zein is in his second year as an Associate Director of Bands at Jersey Village High School in Houston, TX. His responsibilities include conducting the Symphonic Band and assisting with the Jersey Village Marching Band. In 2018, they advanced to the UIL 6A State Marching Contest for the first time in school history.
A native Austinite, Ben earned degrees from The University of Texas at Austin in Government and Music Studies with a Performance Certificate in Oboe. In addition to performing in the UT Wind Ensemble, he studied Oboe with Dr. Andrew Parker and Conducting with Prof. Jerry Junkin, Dr. Scott Hanna, and Dr. Ryan Kelly. He was a six-year member of the Longhorn Band, and served on the leadership team and with Kappa Kappa Psi for several years.
In the Spring of 2018, Ben student-taught at Vandegrift High School and Four Points Middle School. Additionally, he worked with the McCallum High School Marching Band from 2011 through 2018, starting as a marching tech and evolving into the drill and show designer. In 2017, the McCallum Marching Band advanced to the UIL 5A State Marching Band Contest for the first time since 2005.
Outside of school and music, Ben enjoys training for his next marathon and supporting all Longhorn Sports.
Alex Hedden, Associate Director of Bands, BM University of Georgia
Alex Hedden is excited to join the staff at Jersey Village High School in 2019! His responsibilities at Jersey Village will include Directing the Symphonic Winds and assisting with the marching band.
Before coming to Jersey Village, Mr. Hedden taught for two years at Morton Ranch High School in Katy ISD and with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps from Austin, TX. Before moving to Texas, Mr. Hedden attended the University of Georgia, where he graduated summa cum laude and received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. Mr. Hedden performed as a saxophone player in numerous concert, chamber, and jazz ensembles at UGA, and as a euphonium player at Carolina Crown for 3 years (2014-2016). Alex was also very fortunate to complete his degree while student teaching at Harrison High School, a Sudler Flag of Honor program.
Outside of teaching, Mr. Hedden enjoys spending time with his friends and family across both Texas and Georgia. He also enjoys rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson Tigers, and the Carolina Panthers throughout the year!
